<br /></div>
This year's Hatteras trip was pretty sweet. This is just a very brief recap of what went on while we were there: If you averaged out the amount of days windsurfing we had we pretty much sailed every second day. Most of the winds were from the north which made it perfect for freestyle since the sound becomes even more flat. We missed windfest but we got to check out the grand opening of Wind-NC and Hatteras Island Boardsports. It was a blast and the shop looks amazing! In terms of windsurfing, both Adam and I learned how to get into switch stance and comfortably plane while staying switch. We practiced ducking the sail but we still need some more, haha. I finally landed my first spock 540. The first one was kind of slow but then i start getting them pretty much perfect by almost planning out of a few. Here is a video were you can see it:<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/41742876" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe><br />
Overall, we had a blast as usual. We learned a ton which is always great and we can't wait until next year when we get to do it all over again. The plan is to hit up the gorge in a few weeks. We're hoping to leave around mid June and stay until mid July or even later.LastWordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16777458753413636612noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7689820688781059794.post-13589764244655541182012-01-31T17:46:00.000-08:002012-01-31T17:46:13.843-08:00Adam gets interviewed by Windsport Magazine!Adam got interviewed by Windsport Magazine for his Umi Pictures Bonaire Editing Competition video! A few more months of winter then comes spring. We all know what that means! WInd, wind, and more wind! Hopefully everyone is finding a way to stay active during this cold season. You don't want to get back on your board in the spring only to have your session cut short due to lack of stamina! One great way to keep in shape and to escape the grey coldness outside is to do some indoor rock climbing. We've been at it regularly for a few months now and its definitely improved our strength. It really works on all the key factors affecting your windsurfing. Its great for upper body and core strength as well as stamina and balance. Here are a few photos of us at our local climbing gym. Here are some pics of us from November 12th at Sherkston. It was a great day I was out on my 4.5 and Adam was on his 4.1, it was pretty warm for November and the waves were setting up nicely. The great thing about Sherkston is that when its super windy you get some nice waves but when it dies off the first 100m past the shore-break is perfectly flat and awesome for freestyle. Maybe we'll squeeze in a few more sessions before the season comes to a complete end. Looks like some more warm and windy days might be coming up in the next few days.LastWordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16777458753413636612noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7689820688781059794.post-56887871932944937532011-10-03T14:18:00.000-07:002011-10-03T14:18:33.264-07:00Professor's Lake, new freestyle spot?We sure think so! Got there at around 10:00am. Wind was blowing strong but it looked gusty (as we expected it to be). Adam rigged up his 4.1 Firefly and headed out full power busting out a super fast spock on his first run out, this set the tone for the rest of the day. I rigged up my 4.5 Combat and was also fully powered and super excited. The gusts were strong and powerful but long enough to go for some moves. The water was pretty flat making it ideal of freestyle. We spent the rest of the day going for move after move after move. The short distance definitely made it go by quicker. Highlights of the day were probably Adam's super fast grubby 540 as well as his stylish, fully extended, one handed flaka which he almost landed by a hair. I had some long sliding vulcans and sailed out switch stance getting fully on the plane before trying an eslider (got around 180 and exploded, haha). What really made my day was my spock, pulled the entire thing and flipped the sail around but couldn't get my other hand on the boom in time keeping me from fully landing it. Next time for sure i'll get it down nice and clean.

For the past few days we've been windsurfing at Long Beach Conservation Area on Lake Erie. Its about a 1.5 hour drive for us so its not too often that we go there. Usually, if the wind is blowing South West we head down to Sherkston Shores for the waves, but lately Long Beach has been getting the most wind. Usually when you get to Long Beach you're not alone. We tend to see at least five other windsurfers out, sometimes twice that and a few Kitesurfer. The thing I like about it is that the launch is this little bay thats protected from the waves by a rocky reef. You can get a bit of a wind shadow in there but its not a huge problem. As you get into the bay the water gets pretty flat with some little swells closer to shore making it one of my favourite spots to freestyle. Going out, however, is another story. Chop, chop, and more chop. Hopefully we get some stronger winds in the fall and I can't wait for a nice wave session at Sherkston! Here is a picture of me going for a spock inside the bay.</div>

Our trip has been great and we wish it could have lasted longer but all good things must come to an end. Although the wind wasn't the best it didn't take away from how much fun we had on our vacation. The great thing about Hatteras is that there are a ton of other things to do. We did everything from windsurfing, skim boarding, and surfing to fishing and hiking. Here are a few quick peaks into how our trip looked like. Now we're back in Canada and already we were blessed with some wind. We were greeted with a nice 4.5/4.1 day at Keswick on Lake Simcoe yesterday. Good wind but a little too much chop for freestyle.<br />

We got here April 30th at around 8pm and managed to find our house in the dark. The wind was pretty good for a few days but for the past three it's been pretty much dead. This gave us time to try surfing for the first time. First time out we borrowed some boards from our friend Tom Soltysiak and realized how difficult, but very fun, surfing actually was. So the next day we went out to all the windsurf/surf shop we could find and found ourselves some pretty good beginner boards for only $80 (after taxes). So the past few days were spent learning to surf! (Picture on the Top left: Me catching a fun wave!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">However, the forecast looks pretty nice for the rest of the week, lets just hope it stays that way. We're looking at some nice northern winds then a days break then some southern winds coming in strong. The trip is going great, can't wait to get back out onto the water!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Exams went well and marks or pretty good but now its time to forget about school and get our heads in pure windsurfing mode! We've planned our route and packed the car up to its max. This Spock 540 I did at the Hamilton Harbour, Ontario last year. I first landed this trick in Hatteras, North Carolina a year ago. I came into Hatteras with a vulcan going one way and 2 weeks later came back with a Spock going both ways. If you want to learn how to freestyle go to Hatteras, its crazy windy, really shallow and flat water. You'll learn 10 times as fast if your sailing in the right conditions, especially where its windy more than 2 times a week (thats Ontario for you). I'm heading down to Hatteras for 3 weeks soon, my goal is to learn how to grubby both ways, flak-a both ways, try a shaka (really hard move) and some switch stance moves. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> Winter has been dragging on for far too long this year. With air temperatures finally reaching a reasonable 8 degrees Celsius and a less then reliable forecast we decided to hit up Hamilton Harbour. The wind was blowing 15-20 knots north/northwest so it was almost straight onshore. This mean't you had about 200 meters of sailing room and gusty conditions. We took our biggest sails, which means my dad was on a 5.7, Adam was on a 5.4, and I was out on a 5.2. Most of the time we were planing even with the gusty conditions. The water must have been just above 0, maybe 2 degrees, but we couldn't just sail back and forth so we got pretty wet and cold. It was also a good time to test out our GoPro for the first time on the water. Heres a video of Tom doing a vulcan:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
